Eldercare Support Program

Eldercare Support Program

The Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia (AHCWA) is committed to building capacity within Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) across Western Australia—particularly for those working in or entering the aged care sector.

Funded by NACCHO, the Elder Care Support Program strengthens the ability of ACCHSs to deliver culturally safe, community-led aged care services. By engaging local Community members in Elder Care Support roles, the program enables Aboriginal workers to walk alongside Elders and families—connecting them to essential services like My Aged Care, while ensuring care is grounded in cultural knowledge and respect.

Non-Accredited Education and Training

To support this work, AHCWA delivers a holistic, non-accredited training suite for Elder Care Support staff within the ACCHS sector. The training is culturally appropriate and aims to build confidence in navigating aged care systems while working respectfully with Elders and families.

Key topics include:
• understanding and navigating the aged care system
• My Aged Care portal and referral processes
• introduction to the NDIS
• working with members of the Stolen Generations
• supporting Elders and families with changing needs
• navigating difficult conversations
• delivering culturally safe palliative care and supporting Sorry Business
• key cultural considerations in Aboriginal aged care

The training is delivered in a culturally safe and inclusive environment, recognising the lived experience, cultural knowledge, and leadership of Aboriginal people working in this space.
